Preparing For National Novel Writing Month 2017

This year I decided to participate in NaNoWriMo. I am extremely excited. I have always wanted to write a novel length story but never could find the motivation to do so. Recently, I have been wanting to turn a short story that I wrote in my final year of university into a short novel for a long time. I feel that I chose a story that has being hindered by the constraints of length.

What is NaNoWriMo?

NoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month which occurs annually in November. The goal is to write 50,000 words between the first and the last day of November. To reach this goal, I plan to dedicate an hour each day to writing.

While you are encouraged to start a new story, it doesn’t matter if you already have something written prior. All that matters is that during that month of November, you are writing.

Goals for NaNoWriMo 2017

I have a couple of goals for NaNoWriMo. The first is to hit the word count or write for 30-60 hours. To achieve this goal I plan to aim to write about 3-5 pages a day. I’ve predicated that my story will have about 15 chapters in it, so my goal is to complete a chapter (6-10 pages each) every other day.

My other goal is to successfully turn a short story that I wrote in the spring into a novel. When I originally started to write this story, I was having trouble squeezing everything I wanted to say into a limited word count. I am looking forward to having no maximum, only a minimum.

NaNoWriMo Prep

To prepare for National Novel Writing Month, I have been reading novels (I wish I had read more over the summer). I also prepared an extremely brief outline that reminds me of the major events from the original story. Other than that, I’m doing writing prompts and blog posts to keep my mind in the writing mode.

Story Expansion

While I expand the story, I hope that I am also going to improve it as the length grows. I am going to add more details and spend more time building the world and the relationships.

I want to show the bond that Melanie has for her animal friends and develop that relationship before the plot truly begins. I want people to feel bad for Melanie as she is neglected and abused, so that people will still love her when she starts doing questionable things to protect her animals.

I am going to spend more time building relationships between Melanie and the people that she encounters. I am going to work more to hard to make people experience Melanie’s feelings, and not just tell them about her feelings. I want to immerse the reader so they feel like they are part of the story.

NaNoWriMo Website Postings

I have decided to do weekly posts to discuss how I’m doing. The posts will include a weekly work count, the challenges I’ve faced over that week, and things I’m proud of accomplishing.

In addition, I have begun the interview process for my November instalment of my interview series. This month I am featuring an author who is going to be published in 2018. The content of this book was NaNoWriMo 2015. I am very excited to get to know this author a little bit better.
