Silencing your Inner Critic

This year is the first time that I am participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Although it is only day 4, it is the end of the first calendar week of November (which is when I will be sharing updates).

his week was a lot harder than I anticipated. During the last week of October, I could feel my mind wanting to write but I didn't let it. And I'm really wishing that I had because now I don't know what to write. And my inner was so less than helpful.  The critic within would always tell me that what I was writing was not good enough to use in a publishable novel. But I'm trying to push the "so what" ideology into my brain. Why does it matter if half of my first draft is unusable? It's better to have words on the page to work with than not.

Week 1 Word Count

Starting Word Count: 0
Ending Word Count: 1,670

Quick Day Overview

Day 1: Today I wrote 1,277 words. My mind was busy today and my inner critic was controlling me completely. I was trying to write in an organized and rational manner which I think was preventing me from getting the word count I needed. I was extremely proud of myself during the sprint I did the first evening. In half an hour I was able to write approximately 800 words.

Day 2: Today I wrote 0 words. I am very disappointed with myself that I didn't even get a couple. Today I was busy at a book launch. I was planning to write when I got home but my brain was more tired than I was expecting so I watched part of a movie and went to sleep.

Day 3: I wrote 393 words today. I was also busy today, doing things for the magazine I'm working on. I also went on a breakfast and coffee date with one of my best friends. Most of my free time at home was spent creating a black and white version of the Media Kit for my magazine. After that, I had a little bit of brain power left so I made myself write for about half an hour.

Summary: Overall, my biggest struggle was finding time to sit down and force myself to write. In addition, I need to silence my inner critic so that I can get all of the ideas onto the page without worrying the order, how the appear, and minor editing details such as repetitive  words.

Upcoming Goals

  • Hit 16,000 word count by next weekend
  • Write at least once a day, even if it's only a couple hundred words
  • Ignore my inner critic, write in an unorganized fashion as ideas come to mind
