The Surreal Experience Of Getting Published

On Friday, December 22 I decided to start one of my 2018 goals early: getting published. I figured that starting this goal early would help me get published in early 2018. I had no idea what was in store for me after that. Around 4pm on Friday, I went onto The Mighty and submitted an article that I had secretly been working on. A few hours later, just before my boyfriend got home from work, I received a notification from the Chronic Illness Editor saying, "We are publishing your story!"

I couldn't believe my eyes. I reread the email over several times, not believing what I was reading. Published. I was going to be published. I was over the moon. Shocked. Excited. And then I realized that I had to tell my boyfriend that I had written a story about him. Not only that I had written a story but that the story was going to be published.

t was a surreal experience from the start. In the email, they told me that it could take up to two weeks for it to get published. No problem, I thought. Two weeks would bring me into the first or second week of January. I was more than happy with that.

When my boyfriend came home from work, I told him that I had a surprise for him. That I had an additional Christmas gift for him that I couldn't buy. But in exchange for getting an early gift, I bargained to trade for one of my Christmas presents. When I showed him the email from the editor, he was so happy and extremely proud of me. It was the first piece I had ever written about him and it was also my first published work.

The next day, I received an email for the Chronic Illness Editor, asking for me to resend her the pictures I had submitted. Around 1am on my boyfriend's birthday, within an hour of me emailing her the images, my post was published for the world to see.

I couldn't have planned it better if I had tried.

When I shared it with on my Facebook pages, the amount of responses that I received was incredible. I am so thankful for the love and support of everyone in my life. My post was shared a dozen times. Everytime I look at the post statistics by Facebook, I am overwhelmed with joy. I did not expect it to receive as much buzz as it did.

I am thankful for all the kind words and support of the people I know and of the people who I don't know.

This experience has given me a much needed confidence boost about my writing. I am excited to continue to pursue publication and see where this career in this industry takes me.
