Quotes from Notes on a Nervous Planet

When I read I recently read Notes on a Nervous Planet by Matt Haig, which I was delighted to realize was full of great quotes. Reading this book happened to be perfectly timed for Bell Let’s Talk Day. Since this day is so important to me, I like to have a post on my blog that I can use to spread awareness (and hopefully help remove the stigma around mental illness). This year I decided I would share my favourite quotes from one my recent reads.

“I was scared. I couldn’t not be. Being scared is what anxiety is all about.”

The first step to understanding your anxiety is looking at what scares you. Why does this certain thing cause you to be anxious? Knowing what your fear is can help you overcome it.

“One frustration with anxiety is that it is often hard to find a reason behind it. There may be no visible threat and yet you can feel utterly terrorized.”

But sometimes you can’t find a reason behind it. And that can be scary. So take a deep breath. Do grounding exercises. Do your best to calm yourself down, even if you don’t know why you need to.

“I sometimes feel like my head is a computer with too many windows open.”

Sometimes you’re just on overload. Focus on a singular thing so you don’t go into overdrive.

“Don’t worry about things you can’t control.”

Worrying about things you can’t control is pointless. Focus on the things you can control and do everything in your power to handle your concerns.

“When it comes to our minds, awareness is very often the solution itself.”

I’ve always believed the first step to overcoming problems caused by mental illness is to understanding the illness itself. Professional diagnoses followed by in-depth research and reading articles from The Mighty has helped me understand more about myself, which gives me the tools that I need to cope with mental illness.

“Living with anxiety, turning up, and doing stuff with anxiety takes a strength most people will never know.”

Sometimes turning up is half the silent battle. And you should award yourself for it.

“Don’t let anyone or anything make you feel you aren’t enough.”

You are perfect exactly the way you are.

“Be kind to yourself.”

We are our biggest bully. Focus on turning your negative thoughts into positive ones.

“If you’re feeling mentally unwell, treat yourself as you would a physical problem.”

Take a mental health day. Focus on self-care and taking care of yourself. Don’t overwork yourself.
