Queen to Ashes (Black Dawn #2) Review

This world isn’t broken into a war of dark and light. Of weakness and power. It’s broken into obscurities, into perspectives of what must be demanded, and what is craved.
— Mallory McCartney, Queen to Ashes

Queen to Ashes by Mallory McCartney is the sequel to Black Dawn and will be on sale as of February 19, 2019. The Black Dawn series is fantasy story that takes place in the fictional world of Kiero. There are currently 2 books out in the series: Black Dawn (published in 2017) and Renegade (prequel to Black Dawn, published in 2018). The third book in the series, Kingdom of Broken Iron, is going to be published later in 2019.

Emory Fae is faking an alliance with Adair Stratton, also known as the Mad King, to buy the Black Dawn Rebellion some time to recuperate from a treasonous act. With her memories slowly returning, Emory starts to realize that not everything was as it seemed. Jealousy, lies, and betrayal have clouded the rebellion. But with the help of friendship and forgiveness, the rebellion might just have a chance.

The world building in the novel is absolutely amazing. The detailed descriptions make me feel as if I’m right there with the characters, experiencing everything they are. In this book, more magical artifacts and abilities have been revealed, and they’re absolutely incredible.

The story is filled with rich and complex characters. The depth of each character is revealed through alternating perspective. None of these characters are black and white; they’re all flawed. But being able to see the complexity of each character allows you to empathize with all the characters, even Adair.

I had no idea where the story was going to go and that’s a true accomplishment because I can usually predict where a story is going to go. But this book is different. I never knew what could happen next. I never saw any of it coming. Not even the ending of a single storyline! I’m so excited to see what will happen in the next parts of the series!

I’ve been meaning to read Renegade for some time now, but my to be read pile is so daunting that it’s hard to make a dent. But after reading this novel, I’m definitely going to have to make some changes to my reading list. Seems like a good book to read for Women’s History Month because I only want to read books by female authors.
